The area of focus in our group is the amount of food waste in the United States. This number is very large and growing.
Toastale estimates that worldwide, 364,383,562 pounds of food gets wasted daily, and Hunger Notes says that almost 815 million people suffered from malnourishment in the year of 2016.
We would like to focus on how this number relates to local charities, and see how charities are not only solving the problem, but also how they contribute to the issue.
Lots of restaurants and bakeries donate to nonprofits organizations, but this got us thinking, what about the bakeries and cafes that don’t donate?
A local nonprofit organization, Meals on Wheels, accepts donations from food facilities, but at times, has trouble making connections with restaurants and bakeries.
For example, Meals on Wheels says that they find a lack of communication with restaurants and bakeries, making it hard to collect their leftovers.
We want to focus on how we could make it easier for food facilities to connect with organizations and make good of their leftovers.
